Manager's note: The News Messenger is republishing some data about The Second Great War veteran James Hamby to pay tribute to the 79th commemoration of D-Day.

Lenoir local and later Valdese occupant James Hamby raged the sea shores of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944 — however that wasn't Hamby's just outing to France.

A resigned Armed force private five star, Hamby returned two times to Normandy for D-Day festivities, filling in as the terrific marshal and visitor of distinction for the Public D-Day Memorial March in Cherbourg, France, in 2017. Before that, Hamby had ventured out to France in 2014 with East Burke Secondary School's walking band for the 70th commemoration of D-Day.

Hamby expected to visit again for the 2019 festival, however kicked the bucket at 93 years old only a couple of months earlier.

His child, Dan, told The News Messenger about Hamby's boldness while chipping in for the draft.
