What Real Madrid did was unethical?or as we say in refined, scientific terms: a dick move?but I certainly wouldn?t call it a mistake. They knew what they were doing, and with Lopetegui?s firing they are actually getting an outcome that benefits them. I?ll elaborate.
Zidane?s departure caught Real Madrid by surprise. The Frenchman?s timing was very inconvenient and left Real with surprisingly few alternatives in the job market, with many of their preferred candidates like Allegri or Pochettino unavailable due to prior commitments and recent contract renewals that made their signings almost impossible. For example, Pochettino?s new 5-year contract with Tottenham was worth almost 50M euros, and you can be sure that Levy would have squeezed every single cent out of Real Madrid before allowing Poch to leave.
In this scenario, Real found in Lopetegui a manager who is a solid fit for the team, and despite his recent contract renewal with the Spanish FA, Real only needed to pay a 2M euro release clause to sign him. And because of how release clauses work, the Spanish FA could do little to prevent this!
And of course, Florentino and co. felt the need to announce this as soon as possible. Just like the Spanish FA, they care a lot about the image they project, and not announcing a manager for over a month makes Real?s leadership look weak and indecisive.
Besides, hiding this decision until the end of the World Cup could have destabilized the Spanish NT anyways. Real?s Spanish players already knew of this decision, and if the rumor spread to other Spanish players, the lack of transparency would generate distrust between players and manager. And if this information got leaked to the press during the World Cup, it could have created an even stronger reaction than the one we saw yesterday to Lopetegui?s appointment.
