What Does a Satellite Communications Engineer Do?

A satellite communications engineer designs and provides technical support for the hardware and software systems used to communicate with a satellite and track its position throughout its journey. This job requires you to design new communications systems, upgrade existing systems to make them more efficient, or direct technicians on how to deploy equipment according to plans. You also need to ensure that communication devices can project and receive signals with the lowest possible latency. Another of your responsibilities as a satellite communications engineer will be to test systems in a simulated environment before designing and installing them in a pre-launch satellite.

What Are the Qualifications Needed to Become a Satellite Communications Engineer?

Qualifications in satellite communications engineering are broad. Many employers, including the federal government, want you to have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Government jobs may require a security clearance. You cannot apply for a security clearance yourself, but an employer can apply for one on your behalf. You should also have several years of electrical engineering experience. They are required to take SATCOM courses covering all aspects of satellite subsystem technology, types of frequencies used for communications, and system integration.

Where Does a Satellite Communications Engineer Work?

As a satellite communications engineer, you can work for government agencies, but also for telecommunications companies such as cell phone, internet, or cable TV providers. All of these types of employers use satellites to transmit information that cannot be transmitted directly in line of sight. You can also work for satellite radio stations. The nature of the work duties requires you to perform your work remotely and monitor the progress and performance of the satellite from the ground using telemetry equipment and software.
