Los Angeles — With a three-run homer, Pinch-hitter Jason Heyward broke an eighth-inning tie and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 6-3 triumph over the floundering Seattle Mariners Tuesday night.
To provide the Dodgers their first lead, Heyward lined a high 99 mph fastball from All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz (2-5) over the short wall in the right-field corner. This season, it was his second pinch-hit homer; it also marks his third of a career.
"It's difficult to get runners on base against a closer and hard to create events like that late in the game. Being part of the reward for our group is great, Heyward remarked. "Good swing on the first pitch; he aimed forward. Good couple takes and does a good job of being ready for another one somewhere around the zone to put a decent swing on it.
Max Muncy walked as Will Smith boarded with one out after being struck by a pitch. Then Tommy Edman struck out to prepare the scene for Heyward.
Called upon, he was ready and left with a big hit. Of Heyward's home run, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remarked, "That for me was one of the highlights of the season."
