The Journey, produced by Christian broadcaster TBN, will be in theaters from Palm Sunday (April 2) to Easter Sunday (April 9). The film follows Bocelli and his wife Veronica as they travel on horseback through the beautiful hills and valleys of the Italian countryside and talk about faith, hope and family with their friends, including singer Michael W. Smith.
To share his Christian faith and celebrate the film's release, the award-winning actor, who lost his sight as a child and was blind at the age of 12, performed the classic anthem 'Amazing Grace' at Dooley Park in Times Square.
"The Journey" features stunning performances by Bocelli and famous Christian singers Michael W. Smith, 2CELLOS, Tori Kelly, Clara Barbier Serrano, Tauren Wells, TAYA, 40 Fingers and Katherine Jenkins, who accompanied him on a tour cathedrals and places of worship. including his funeral of apostles and saints.
“We learned a lot about trust, trust in process, exercising faith, trusting in providence, and transforming exhaustion into energy and positivity. We approached our journey with two main goals: the first to pay homage to these sacred places and the second to make music together, and the two goals are closely linked because music is indeed a form of prayer,” Bocelli told The Christian Post.
For the Bocellis, the trip had a "deeper purpose" than simply traveling through the scenic Italian countryside. It is "of a spiritual nature, not of places, but of values". "Learn more with our traveling friends: peace, forgiveness, faith, family hope and prayer."
Bocelli said visiting shrines and monasteries is an emotional experience. "[They] gave us food for thought" because of "the many centuries of prayer" observed in the various places.
"The Basilica of Santa Cristina in Bolsena was one of the most extraordinary moments of the whole trip," Bocelli revealed. "I was so lucky to have my daughter Virginia with me for this special occasion. The church has thousands of years of history and life. Inside are kept the sacred remains of Santa Cristina, who died a young martyr. With my daughter, we pray and contemplate the strength of those who are willing to sacrifice their brief existence for their religion, their beliefs and their ideals.
The journey begins with a blessing from Roman Catholic Pope Francis. Bocelli, a practicing Catholic, told CP he looks forward to audiences celebrating this holy time of Lent, Good Friday and Easter with this film as a ministry tool for families to reflect on their faith.
“It was a very spiritual moment/experience for me. I really hope people who see this movie find new and deeper hope and faith," Bocelli told CP on the red carpet of the movie's New York premiere. "I really think it's been a incredible journey for us," Veronica added. "And I really hope we can share those emotions with friends while riding this horse on the journey back from Rome."
