BTS has become a global sensation, but with their success comes an important question: Do there groups’ fame overshadow other Kpop groups? No matter how much BTS dominates in the K-pop scene, it would be great to dig into whether or not this leads to an uneven situation towards other artists in the industry.

Does BTS's Fame Overshadow Other K-pop Groups Unfairly?

BTS's Global Reach

Unlike any other Kpop world come up BTS. It has ensured that they have broke numerous records, from there they won international awards and there are millions of them around the world. Since their music crosses cultures and they create the roadblock for K pop’s world fame. However, this huge exposure to praise and blame.

The Impact on Other K-pop Groups

Many fans and critics have complained that BTS's global success left little room for other K-pop groups to shine as big as them. Other artists are on the same level but if BTS’s media presence is constant and they collaborate with someone internationally, or they have high profile performances, it’s actually very hard for them to get the same type of recognition. Don’t confuse this with thinking these groups aren’t talented or influential, it’s just that these days the light pretty much stays on BTS.

  • Limited Media Attention: Often they get more coverage of K-pop bands than others and BTS is often the face of K-pop.
  • Global Marketing Influence: Thanks to the record-breaking sales and truly massive tours, BTS is a key global K-pop marketing figure. They may not receive the kind of foreign promotional support and international reach that other groups will.

Of note though, is that BTS’s popularity has helped K-pop enter the global mainstream. Without a huge amount of K-pop artists success, it’s likely that a large amount of them wouldn’t have the same opportunities for international exposure.

Have other groups still been successful?

Despite getting all the attention, K-pop groups still do well without their member. Already, BLACKPINK, EXO, TWICE and Stray Kids have created their own fan bases and have been successful. And some of these groups even beat BTS in some of the markets or the music industry.

For instance, BLACKPINK has been a source of news and the fashion industry, as they’ve been associated with major brands of luxury. Stray Kids has mounted an impressive international following while EXO continues to be a big name in China.

The thinking where BTS’s fame eclipses others doesn’t take into consideration these groups’ unique success. Each of them has their own style of music, style of message, style of K-pop.

The Importance of Group Dynamics

However, as we all know K-pop is so diverse, there are so many different genres and that the different groups all release different music. The industry is not tackled by just one group, although BTS’s fame may be what takes over the conversation. In fact, BTS has likely helped to elevate the entire K-pop genre in its success, making it far more competitive and dynamic. New groups therefore keep debuting with very strong fanbases while other unique styles make the scene diversified.
