Due to Tropical Storm Helene's predicted fast intensification into a Category 3 hurricane and its projected route toward the Florida coast, the Gulf Coast is prepared for a significant hurricane landfall later this week. Two days before Hurricane Helene was predicted to make landfall late on Thursday, residents were already packing up and evacuating and stuffing sandbags.
On Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 61 counties. Thirteen counties have orders to evacuate, either voluntarily or involuntarily.
In addition to President Biden's declaration of an emergency in Florida, federal officials also sent out search and rescue and power restoration teams, as well as emergency food and water supplies and electric generators.
