Pioneer Carpet One Is Calling Me 5 Times A Day About An Old Debt. Is This Even Legal?

I need to know if I'm being harassed or if this is just normal collection tactics. I had some carpet installed maybe 3 years ago and honestly, I completely forgot about the remaining balance. I moved to a new state last year and I guess they finally tracked me down.

At first it was just a letter, which I ignored because I was stressed and didn't know what to do. But now it's gotten insane. They call my cell phone multiple times a day, sometimes starting at 8 in the morning. They've even called my job and asked for me at the front desk, which was so embarrassing.

The guy on the phone is really aggressive. He keeps saying things like "we know you have the money" and "we're going to take legal action if you don't pay today." I told him I needed to verify the debt first, and he got even angrier and said he'd "send it to the attorneys" if I didn't give him a credit card number right then.

I'm reading online that collectors can't harass you or call you at work if you tell them to stop, but I'm scared to push back because I don't want to make them madder. I also want to know if they can even collect this debt after all this time. Is there a statute of limitations on this kind of thing?

Has anyone dealt with aggressive collectors from this company? Can I just send them a letter asking them to only contact me by mail? And if I do settle with them, how do I make sure it actually goes away and they don't sell the rest to another collector?

I just want this nightmare to end without getting sued or ruining my credit. Any advice from someone who's been through this would be a huge help right now.
