At the party convention, Democrats are gathering behind Kamala Harris and Tim Walz; nevertheless, demonstrations over the Gaza conflict are also expected.
For Democrats in the United States, these have been hectic few weeks.
Concerned about his age and capacity to defeat his Republican competitor and predecessor Donald Trump, incumbent Joe Biden declared less than a month ago he was pulling out from the 2024 presidential contest.
Riding a flood of support from all levels of the Democratic Party grassroots and Congressmen, Biden's Vice President Kamala Harris has become the presidential candidate for the party since then.
According to Harris's campaign, her choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential running partner also energized Democrats and attracted tens of millions of fresh donations.
Now, in line with custom during presidential election years, the party is scheduled to assemble in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention. As party members band together behind the Harris-Walz ticket less than three months before Election Day, Democrats hope the convention will be a potent demonstration of togetherness.
But specifically, what does the convention have in store this year? Here is everything you gotta know.
What is the Democratic National Convention exactly?
Comprising every four years, the Democratic National Convention is a formal process for choosing the party nominees for vice president and president.
Democrats vote on the party's platform and other policies as well, but the convention actually acts as a means of generating excitement for the Democratic slate.
Already confirmed as the 2024 contenders are Haven't Harris and Walz?
Indeed; but, things are different this year.
On August 6, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) declared formally Harris and Walz as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively.
That is so because earlier this month Democrats conducted a virtual roll-call vote.
Most Democratic delegates—people who usually vote for the presidential nominee at the convention depending on primary and caucus results—supported Harris during that roll call.
Usually, the convention hosts the official roll-call vote. However, this year the party decided to have a virtual roll call ahead since Democrats had expressed worries about Harris possibly being missed off Ohio ballots owing of a procedural problem.
So will the convention feature a roll-call vote?
The Democratic National Committee confirms, indeed.
The committee claims, however, the vote will be "ceremonial" as Harris and Walz have already been confirmed.
On August 6 Convention Chair Minyon Moore said: " Democratic delegates will celebrate this historic ticket with a ceremonial roll call and tell the story of Vice President Harris, Governor Walz, and the Democratic Party as we prepare to defeat Donald Trump once again."
At the Republican National Convention in July, Trump was formally recognized as the nominee for the Republican Party. Last month during the convention, US Senator JD Vance, his running companion, was also nominated and confirmed.
Besides that, who will be attending and what else is on the agenda?
Democratic legislators are supposed to participate in the four-day convention alongside the Democratic delegates and other party members.
Although a complete slate of speakers has not yet been announced, US media have indicated that Biden, who supported Harris following his late last month withdrawal from the race, will be the keynote speaker on the first night of the convention on August 19.
Additionally planned are speeches by Harris and Walz. On August 21, the vice presidential candidate will speak to the assembly; on August 22, the presidential candidate will wrap up the proceedings.
Event planners project that roughly 50,000 people will descend on Chicago.
Apart from what else should one expect?
Although Democrats have mostly united around Harris since she started her campaign for the White House last month, she still faces requests to deviate from the positions of the Biden government on Israel and the Gaza war.
Harris is so anticipated to encounter significant demonstrations on the convention's fringes as activists call for an end to the conflict and unwavering US support of Israel.
Protesters have been demanding that Washington stop arming Israel with weaponry since it is attacking the coastal Palestinian enclave months ago. Along with causing a humanitarian disaster, the Israeli war has claimed about 40,000 Palestinians dead.
Planning marches on August 19 and August 22 are the Coalition to March on the DNC, a coalition of protest groups. " Democratic Party leadership switching out their presidential nominee does not wash the blood of nearly 50,000 Palestinians off their hands,” it states on its website.
The coalition claimed, " Biden's entire government, together with high ranking Democratic Party members from all over the country, has spent the last ten months wholeheartedly supporting the genocide in Gaza with our tax dollars."
