If the Grammy Awards are all about music industry prestige, the MTV Video Music Awards, or VMAs for short, are all about outrageous and eye-catching performances.

Not that we're complaining. Since the initial event in 1984, which included a very contentious performance by a teenage up-and-comer named Madonna, adolescents have eagerly awaited the so-called "Super Bowl for Young People" all year (while their parents dread it).

With the 2018 presentation set for Monday and Cardi B dominating the field with the most nominations, there is no better opportunity to look back at the sexiest and most shocking performances in the award ceremony's short history.

Here are the ten most sexiest performances in contemporary music, listed chronologically.

1. Madonna, "Like a Virgin" (1984)

The Queen of Pop's breakout performance established her as a troublemaker from the start. Walking across a stage in a bridal gown was much more terrifying in the 1980s than it is now.

2) Janet Jackson "That's the Way Love Goes/If" — 1993

That's the Way Love Goes/If

With the sexually charged hits "That's the Way Love Goes" and "If," Ms. Rhythm Nation proved she was more than just Michael's younger sister. Her performances at the VMAs showcased her exceptional dance skills and unique abs.

3. Britney Spears "I'm a Slave 4 U" (2001)

Brit has been the world's slave since she went onto the VMA stage in 2001 with a yellow python. The event cemented her status as the top pop singer of the new century.

4. Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera "Like a Virgin/Hollywood" (2003)

Like a Virgin/Hollywood (2003)

Same-sex kisses are no longer a major problem, but when Madonna landed one on Britney during a performance of "Hollywood" in 2003, it startled America and certainly prompted many parents to remove MTV from their family cable package.

5. Beyoncé & Jay-Z "Crazy in Love" (2003)

Audiences were skeptical about Beyoncé's ability to succeed on her own after leaving Destiny's Child, one of the best-selling female groups in history. Her explosive performance presence without Kelly and Michelle silenced any doubters.

6. Shakira "Hips Don't Lie" – In 2006

Shakira recorded one of the best-selling singles of all time, "Hips Don't Lie," which became a global hit in Europe, the United States, Latin America, and beyond. She delivered her hottest interpretation of the song during the 2006 VMAs, when her hips lived up to their promise.

7. Lady Gaga, "Paparazzi" — 2009.

Lady Gaga's performance of "Paparazzi," in her lingerie and with fake blood geysering from her breast, was original and sensual.

8. Katy Perry, Russell Brand, & Joe Perry "We Will Rock You" (2009)

Katy Perry is a pop star no matter how you slice it, but she proved she could hang with the rockers during a joint performance of Queen's "We Will Rock You" with then-husband Russell Brand and Aerosmith's Joe Perry. And we are not complaining about her low-cut top.

9. Miley Cyrus & Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines" (2013)

Former Disney star Miley Cyrus shattered her good-girl image and attacked a foam finger on stage, making her VMA performance the most talked-about since Madonna and Britney's kiss in 2013. The performance was a scorching catastrophe, but Miley considers it a "strategic" hot mess.

10. Nicki Minaj "Anaconda" (2014)

As expected, Nicki Minaj's tribute to huge buttocks included a lot of ass-shaking and quaking. America has officially started a new chapter in its history by embracing a long-held fixation with the buttocks.
