BDD (behaviour driven development, also spelled behavior driven development) is an Agile practice where developers, testers and business people agree on how a feature should behave before any code is written.

You describe the behavior as concrete examples in plain language, usually in a Given-When-Then format:

Given a user has items in their cart
When they apply a valid coupon
Then the total should show the discount

These scenarios are then turned into automated tests with tools like Cucumber (Java/JS), SpecFlow (.NET) or Behave (Python). The scenario works as both the spec and the test, so they don’t drift apart.

How it differs from TDD:

BDD actually grew out of TDD. Many teams use both: BDD for feature-level behavior and TDD for the unit-level code underneath.

BDD works best when the business side really takes part in writing scenarios. If only developers write them, it usually becomes extra overhead without much benefit.

If you want a fuller overview, this behaviour driven development glossary explains it well.
