In the wake of multiple federal investigations into New York City Eric Adams's administration, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) stated on Wednesday that she "does not see how" Adams "can continue governing" the city.
Members of the mayor's administration have recently been the target of numerous raids by federal authorities; these raids are probably all connected to the four ongoing investigations of Adams's administration. Whether Adams colluded with foreign governments to get illicit campaign contributions in 2021 is the main focus of the investigations.
Since then, the commissioner of police in New York, Edward Caban, the chief counsel for Adams, Lisa Zornberg, and David C. Banks, the chancellor of the city's schools, have all resigned. Other high-ranking government officials, such as senior mayoral adviser Timothy Pearson, public safety deputy mayor Philip Banks III, and first deputy mayor Sheena Wright, have had their phones confiscated by FBI agents, and their homes searched.
The government's ability to function is being threatened by the wave of resignations and vacancies, stated Ocasio-Cortez, who declined to support Adams in his primary in 2021. "It will be impossible to find and keep a qualified administration if investigations continue."
She went on, "He should resign for the good of the city."
Adams disputes the claim that there is a staffing shortage in his office.
"We are adding new members all the time," Adams stated on Tuesday. Therefore, let's avoid creating the impression that someone has suddenly decided they don't want to work in local administration.
Adams has received support from another "Squad" member, Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.), who stated that the mayor is "working as hard as he can to be the best mayor possible."
He declared, "Since Eric Adams is the mayor at this time, we need him to succeed in his role."
Adams has maintained that he and his staff have completely cooperated with federal officials and has denied any misconduct in the many campaign and fundraising claims made against him. Aside from Ocasio-Cortez, senator Gustavo Rivera of New York State and councilwoman Tiffany Caban of New York City have also called on Adams to step down due to similar concerns
