Federico Valverde scored a 79th-minute balancer for Madrid after City had revitalized with Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol scoring objectives five minutes separated halfway through the final part at the Santiago Bernabeu Arena.
Bernardo Silva had placed City ahead two minutes into the match, yet Madrid energized with an own-objective by City safeguard R�ben Dias in the twelfth and a score by forward Rodrygo in the fourteenth.
The second leg will be next Wednesday in Manchester.
It is the third successive experience between the clubs in the knockout phases of the Heroes Association. Madrid killed City in the elimination rounds in 2022, while City defeated Madrid at a similar stage the year before. The two groups proceeded to bring home the championship in the wake of disposing of their opponents.
